Drilling Mud Motor
Downhole drilling mud motor is used in the bottom hole assembly (BHA) to provide additional power to the bit while drilling. It uses drilling fluid (commonly referred to as drilling mud, or just mud) to create eccentric motion in the power section of the motor which is transferred as concentric power to the drill bit.
During directional drilling, this capability is used while drilling in sliding mode, when the drill string is not rotated from the surface. Downhole motor can also be used for performance drilling, straight hole drilling, coring, under reaming, and milling operations. In straight hole drilling, the motor functions as a drilling performance tool to increase the rate of penetration and reduce casing wear by minimizing drill string rotation.
